The ORIGINAL Smokers' Haven is a deep rooted tradition in Columbus, Ohio and the nation. Started in the forties by the late Joe Ziev and his brother-in-law, the late Sid Ritter, it became the largest pipe shop in the U.S. in the mid sixties. These fellows were two of the most enthusiastic pipe smokers ever. They were tireless in their efforts to promote the joys of pipe smoking and sought out the finest briar pipes, and crested the very best pipe blends of premium tobaccos. They were so successful that in an average week they sold over a thousand new pipes. They received tobaccos by the truckload and shipped it nationwide to their many thousands of customers. Their mailers were anxiously awaited by over 30,000 readers, who would unfold these treasures into a gigantic 40" x 40" two-sided brochure offering the very best of new items for pipe, tobacco and cigar enthusiasts. In their shop at 47 East Gay Street, they even had "rules" for the sales floor where no salesman could appear on the sales floor without his own lit pipe. Try to get that one by current laws and regulations! They were by far the largest importers of Ganneval, Bondier and Donninger (GBD) pipes, and made frequent trips to the factory in England to essentially dictate the years production runs which were totally consumed by The ORIGINAL Smokers' Haven. In the seventies, Joe opted retirement in sunny Florida, while Sid elected to stay here in Columbus. They sold their operation to a new owner who moved the store twice in about twenty years. Current ownership took over in 1995 where we continue their great traditions today. Owing to the recent resurgence in demand for premium hand-made cigars, the overall emphasis of our shop's offerings have changed somewhat to accommodate contemporary tastes. Meanwhile we still offer the very best briar pipes and all of the premium tobacco blends which made The ORIGINAL Smokers' Haven famous.
